Sean Strickland's consistent volume striking vs. Uriah Hall's fight finishing ability
Sean Strickland currently has a +1.50 striking differential, and while he does have striking power, he seems to be at his best when he is controlling distance and smothering his opponents with volume.
Strickland attempts 13.04 significant strikes per minute, which is the 13th highest output among ranked fighters. In his last four fights, he has been even more active and averaged 16.71 significant strike attempts per minute. That volume has paid off as during the same stretch he has a +3.69 striking differential and a 4-0 record.
As you can see in the following graphic, Strickland has had the striking differential edge in 10 of his 13 fights. He is undefeated in those 10 fights. His pressure and striking volume have been his trademark
This is certainly not the case for Hall. He is clearly a skilled striker, but he does not handle pressure well and often fights at the chosen pace of his opponents. Hall has been outlanded in nine of his 17 fights. Of course that also includes his last fight where he defeated Chris Weidman without landing a single strike.
Overall Hall lands 3.34 significant strikes per minute, absorbs 3.54 per minute and therefore has a -0.20 differential. Currently only 30 of the 178 ranked fighters have a lower striking differential.Â
This seems to set up a pretty simple dynamic in the fight. Strickland is a volume striker who comes forward, while Hall absorbs more than he lands. However, it is a bit more complicated.
Strickland’s style will likely lead to him spending a large portion of this fight at striking range. While he will likely have the edge in terms of volume, Hall could make him pay at some point during the 15 minute fight. In his UFC career, Hall has landed 0.77 knockdowns per 15 minute, which is the 32nd highest rate among ranked fighters, and he has stopped eight of his 17 fights via strikes. He also seems to remain dangerous throughout the course of fights as he has scored stoppages in the first, second, third and fourth rounds.Â
While the stats certainly seem to favor Strickland, his style leaves a clear path to victory for Hall. Strickland has clearly found his groove in his last four fights, but Hall presents a much more dynamic finishing threat.Â
