Watch the biggest college wrestling match while the UFC takes a brief hiatus
It certainly seems like there is a UFC event every Saturday these days. However, this is apparently not actually the case. Not only is there not a UFC this weekend, but there is also not another promotion with readily available stats hosting an event.
In addition to writing this here blog about MMA stats, I also cover wrestling for InterMatWrestle.com, which recently won “Outlet of the Year” from the National Wrestling Media Association. On Friday night on the Big Ten Network, No. 1 Penn State will face off against No. 2 Iowa in the biggest dual meet of the season. The two teams have combined to win 13 of the last 14 NCAA championships, so it is basically the biggest match you can have.
MMA fans should pay particular attention to Penn State’s 133 pounder Roman Bravo-Young. The senior is already a two-time NCAA champion and seems destined to end up in MMA. He trains with Dominick Cruz in the offseason, and he had two-match wrestling and grappling series against UFC bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling (Bravo-Young won the wrestling match, while Sterling won the submission match).
Anyways, I did a full preview of the match, which you can find below. Unfortunately they put it behind the paywall, but if you are interested, I would say it is worth $14.99. I hope nobody takes this as spam and enjoys the rare UFC-free weekend.
